Not a Doer

image

[Bhagvad Gita, Chapter 3, Verse 27]

Implied Meaning: In reality, all work in all respects in done by the gunas (sattva, rajas & tamas) of the nature (prakrati). In spite of this fact whosoever’s inner mind is attracted by pride, such ignorant believes, “I am the doer”.

Comments: The body which is responsible for appearance and other qualities is made of atoms all of which are provided by nature so there is no need to feel proud about it. A person obviously does not choose his/her parents after birth. How much intellect he/she has by birth is beyond anybody’s control. Even thoughts that pop up come from causal body and hence are beyond anyone’s direct control. And eventually, the end result of any action is beyond anyone’s control considering natural calamities, accidents, circumstances, luck etc. So, it is wise to do away with the doership.

Gita in One Verse

Yogayukto vishuddhatma vijitatma jitendriyah;
Sarvabhootatmabhootatma kurvannapi na lipyate.  [Chapter 5, Verse 7]

He who is in Yoga (union), the pure soul (soul here means embodied soul), master of his self (the ego is under him), who has conquered the senses, whose Self becomes the Self of all existences (he considers one Self for all), even though he does actions, he is not involved in them.

Karma Yoga = Act As If

One way to realise Self is to follow the traits of a Self-realised person*. Karma Yoga effectively means working just like the way a Self-realised person* would work. After realising Self, there is no identification with body-mind and hence there is no false ego so why would someone work exclusively for making money, for getting promotion in job, for higher social status etc. One would just work till the previous karmic debt is burnt with the intention to sustain the body and since there is a sense of oneness with everything as everything is Self as known to this person* he/she would do work as love/service towards the consciousness in everything (just like a common man works for himself due to his love for himself). Naturally, this type of work would be the work without bondage which would not be the work done solely for the sake of fruition of the work.

*Whether you realise Self or not, you are still a person to the outside world (the world comprising of people who are not Self-realised). But, after you realise Self you do not consider yourself as person as Self means consciousness.
