Can Consciousness Increase

Q: Does consciousness increase on enlightenment?

A: Let us look at this from two perspectives:

  1. From the perspective of Self: Self is pure consciousness (chinmatra) which never changes. So, from absolute perspective, consciousness does not increase or decrease.
  2. From the perspective of Jiva: As sattvic guna increases tamasic guna decreases. Tamas is responsible for mindlessness. Decrease in mindlessness is increase in mindfulness. So, from the perspective of Jiva (reflected consciousness or chidabhasa) mindfulness increases on enlightenment as sattvic guna increases.

Is World Non-Existent

Q: Does, “Jagat Mithya” mean that the world is non-existent?

A: The word Jagat means manyness or plurality here. Jagat Mithya means that the the sense of otherness is an illusion. There is one absolute truth appearing as many. So, Jagat Mithya does not mean that the world is non-existent.  The world does exist but just like water appears to get divided by a partition while water remaining the same, manyness is only apparent. Everything is consciousness whether it remains undifferentiated or appears as many.

Non-Duality to Duality

Just as taste is hidden in food, bliss is hidden in Self. Just as taste itself cannot experience taste, bliss itself cannot experience bliss. A contrast or comparison is required for such experience to take place. Self needs to become many from one to experience what is present in itSelf. Thus, duality is born out of non-duality. Self projects the world and plays the role of living beings to experience bliss and to experience itSelf.
